At the beginning of the new year in 2022, China and South Korea had a fierce battle in the global shipbuilding market. In the past January, China and South Korea undertook 48% and 45% of global new ship orders respectively, and China ranked first with a weak advantage of 3%.

According to the latest data released by Clarkson on February 8, in January this year, the global turnover of new ship orders was 3.07 million revised gross tons (CGT), an increase of 72% over December last year. This is also the global volume of new ship orders since reaching the high point of 4.67 million CGT in September last year. After a decline of 2.59 million CGT in October, 2.03 million CGT in November and 1.78 million CGT in December, it increased again after four months.

Among them, China has undertaken 1.47 million CGT, with a market share of 48%, ranking first in the world; South Korea has undertaken 1.38 million CGT, with a market share of 45%, ranking second; Japan has undertaken 90000 CGT, with a market share of 3%, ranking third.

It is worth mentioning that in January this year, the new ship orders of South Korea and China increased by 160% and 51% respectively compared with the previous month, while the new ship orders of Japan decreased by 18% in the same period. The pattern of China and South Korea competing for hegemony has become more solid.

From the ship types of global new ship orders in January, large LNG ships with more than 140000 cubic meters and large container ships with more than 12000teu account for 67% of the overall trading volume, and these ship types are the main ship types built by Korean shipbuilding enterprises.

In January this year, the Clarkson new shipbuilding price index was 154.26 points, up 0.08 points from the previous month, maintaining an upward trend for 14 consecutive months.

From the perspective of ship prices of various ship types, the price of VLCC increased from US $112 million to US $114 million, the price of afra tanker increased from US $59 million to US $60 million, the price of 13000 ~ 14000 TEU Container Ship increased from US $148 million to US $148.5 million, and the price of 174000 m3 LNG ship increased from US $210 million to US $214 million. With the exception of Suez oil tankers, the prices of other ship types have increased.

As of the end of January this year, the global order volume of handheld new ships was 91.28 million CGT, an increase of 110000 CGT over the end of December last year. Among them, South Korea's orders for handheld new ships increased by 690000 CGT, while China and Japan's orders for handheld new ships decreased by 40000 CGT and 240000 CGT respectively.
